BOOK Marcel Speet (Netherlands, 1951) is a contemporary artist working across painting, works on paper, assemblages, installations and photography. His work emerges from a fusion of material and visual experiences — drawing on nature, architecture, fashion and his own history — resulting in a rich and diverse artistic language.
Before his formal art education, Speet’s fascination with materials and colour had already taken form. At twelve, while living in a Catholic seminary, he began experimenting with plaster and paint in the basement — throwing colours together, watching them run and merge. It gave the grey Catholic world a new and vivid dimension, shaping his later approach to painting. Together with two fellow students he started a small club, “KiK, Kunst im Keller” (Art in the Cellar), occasionally turning the school into an improvised exhibition space. Around the same time he began an intense search for what was then considered contemporary art, following major painters and linking those discoveries to his interests in music and literature. A few years later he left theology behind, and with his father’s active support was admitted as one of the youngest evening students at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, working by day to fund his studies. The tension between discipline and freedom became the ground from which his art would grow.
Since studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1969, Speet has pursued a continuous search for artistic freedom. His practice explores complexity through material, texture and colour, questioning conventional dimensions while opening new creative paths. He disrupts, rearranges and plays to expand the possibilities of form and expression.
His works are part of private collections in Europe, the United States and Asia, including New York, London, Chicago, Seoul and Rotterdam. Now based near Bordeaux, France, he continues to push the boundaries of his artistic expression, using dynamic compositions and vivid colours to convey energy and vitality.
Marcel Speet (Pays-Bas, 1951) est un artiste contemporain qui travaille la peinture, le dessin, les assemblages, les installations et la photographie. Son œuvre naît d’une fusion d’expériences matérielles et visuelles — inspirées par la nature, l’architecture, la mode et son histoire personnelle — donnant lieu à un langage artistique riche et varié.
Avant toute formation artistique, la fascination de Speet pour la matière et la couleur s’était déjà affirmée. À douze ans, au séminaire catholique, il commença à expérimenter dans la cave avec le plâtre et la peinture — jetant les couleurs, les regardant se mêler et se répandre. Cela donna au monde catholique gris une dimension nouvelle et vivante, qui marqua sa future manière de peindre. Avec deux camarades, il créa un petit club, « KiK, Kunst im Keller », qui transformait parfois l’école en espace d’exposition improvisé. Parallèlement, il se mit à chercher passionnément tout ce qui touchait à l’art contemporain de l’époque, suivant le travail des grands artistes et reliant ces découvertes à la musique et à la littérature. Quelques années plus tard, il abandonna la théologie. Avec le soutien actif de son père, il fut admis comme l’un des plus jeunes étudiants du soir à la Gerrit Rietveld Academie d’Amsterdam, travaillant le jour pour financer ses études. Cette tension entre discipline et liberté devint la source même de son œuvre.
Depuis ses études à la Gerrit Rietveld Academie d’Amsterdam en 1969, Speet poursuit une recherche constante de liberté artistique. Sa démarche explore la complexité à travers la matière, la texture et la couleur, en remettant en question les dimensions conventionnelles et en ouvrant de nouvelles voies créatives. Il perturbe, réorganise et joue pour élargir les possibilités de la forme et de l’expression.
Ses œuvres se trouvent dans des collections privées en Europe, aux États-Unis et en Asie, notamment à New York, Londres, Chicago, Séoul et Rotterdam. Aujourd’hui installé près de Bordeaux, en France, il continue d’explorer les limites de son expression artistique, en jouant avec des compositions dynamiques et des couleurs vives pour transmettre énergie et vitalité.

Nog vóór zijn kunstopleiding ontstond Speets fascinatie voor materiaal en kleur. Op twaalfjarige leeftijd, in een katholiek seminarie, begon hij in de kelder te experimenteren met gips en verf — kleuren die hij over elkaar heen gooide en zag samenvloeien. Het gaf het grauwe katholieke bestaan een nieuwe, levendige dimensie en beïnvloedde zijn latere manier van schilderen. Samen met twee medestudenten richtte hij een klein clubje op, “KiK, Kunst im Keller”, waarmee ze af en toe de school veranderden in een geïmproviseerde tentoonstellingsruimte. Tegelijkertijd begon hij fanatiek te zoeken naar alles wat toen met hedendaagse kunst te maken had, volgde wat belangrijke kunstenaars maakten en verbond dat met zijn belangstelling voor muziek en literatuur. Enkele jaren later liet hij de theologie achter zich. Met de actieve steun van zijn vader, die het belang van deze stap inzag, werd hij als uitzonderlijk jonge avondstudent toegelaten tot de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, terwijl hij overdag werkte om zijn studie te bekostigen. De spanning tussen orde en vrijheid werd de voedingsbodem van zijn kunstenaarschap.
Sinds zijn studie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1969 richt Speet zich op een voortdurende zoektocht naar artistieke vrijheid. Zijn praktijk onderzoekt complexiteit via materiaal, textuur en kleur, waarbij conventionele dimensies ter discussie worden gesteld en nieuwe creatieve mogelijkheden zichtbaar worden. Hij verstoort, herschikt en speelt om de grenzen van vorm en expressie te verleggen.
Zijn werken bevinden zich in privécollecties in Europa, de Verenigde Staten en Azië, waaronder New York, Londen, Chicago, Seoel en Rotterdam. Momenteel gevestigd nabij Bordeaux, Frankrijk, blijft hij de grenzen van zijn artistieke expressie verkennen, waarbij hij speelt met dynamische composities en levendige kleuren om energie en vitaliteit over te brengen.
